THE UFAT CONCEPT

Cells, microvessels
and matrix. Together.

Unified Fluid Adipose Tissue describes the tissue concept behind Liposmart: preparing the patient’s own adipose tissue with attention to its connected biological environment.

THE LIPOSMART TISSUE PERSPECTIVE

The stromal vascular niche

The stromal vascular niche is the local environment around small blood vessels. Resident cells and extracellular matrix form a three-dimensional tissue architecture within which biological signals are exchanged.

Cells exchange signals and respond to their physical surroundings within this environment. Liposmart’s tissue-preservation rationale centres on those relationships.

The relationships matter.

The niche is the local environment where vessels, stromal cells and matrix meet. This connected tissue environment is central to the Liposmart approach.

THE BIOLOGICAL RATIONALE

Why the surrounding tissue matters

01

Cells in their environment

Resident cells respond to neighbouring cells and to the structure around them. The Liposmart concept considers those relationships alongside the cells themselves.

02

A matrix that provides cues

The extracellular matrix provides support and attachment sites. Its physical and biochemical properties influence how cells sense their surroundings—a process studied in mechanobiology.

03

Signals between cells

Cells release soluble factors and extracellular vesicles. These signalling systems form part of the rationale for studying adipose tissue as a connected biological preparation.

TISSUE PREPARATION

Microfragmented tissue and washed tissue

Microfragmented adipose tissue (MFAT) describes tissue mechanically prepared into smaller clusters. The chamber systems also provide washing-only pathways, without the selected tissue-sizing step.

The original UFAT framework considered both microfragmented preparations and a softer, non-microfragmented preparation. Today, Liposmart uses UFAT as the name of its tissue concept and of the UFAT 120 mL system. A device name and a tissue preparation describe different things.

Filter aperture, final fragment size and tissue stiffness are distinct properties. The product-specific preparation instructions determine the available pathways.

Tissue preparation or cell fraction?

MFAT is a tissue preparation. Stromal vascular fraction (SVF) describes a heterogeneous cellular fraction obtained from adipose tissue, commonly through enzymatic processing. The stromal vascular niche (SVN) describes the cells’ organised microenvironment.

The Liposmart narrative centres on tissue organisation. Laboratory characterisation examines what is retained in sampled preparations; clinical research asks separate questions about outcomes in patients.
